FAQ'S - Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a domain name?

There are numerous companies you can utilize to obtain your domain name but we refer all of our clients to www.domaintools.com since have the most reliable service and best reputation.

How do I know if my domain name is available?

The easiest way to accomplish this is to do a search (better known as a whois look-up) for the domain name you would like. The most utilized of these is www.internic.net because their database covers domain names ending in the following context: .aero, .arpa, .biz, .com, .coop, .edu, .info, .int, .museum, .net and .org. Another alternative to Internic is www.betterwhois.com but it gives you the same results. Should you need to do a whois look-up on a domain name that ends with .us then you will need to utilize www.whois.us in order to check the availability.

What if the domain name I want is taken?

You may want to consider using another extension on the end of your domain name. For instance if you chose www.yourdomain.com and it was already taken you may want to consider www.yourdomain.net as an alternative. Another way is to place a hyphen between the words of your name. Be careful here though as you can get in serious trouble with copyright infringement and have serious legal problems so check very carefully on copyright laws before just assuming a hyphen will work. Check out the law on copyrights here www.copyright.gov.

How do I know what to call my domain?

When selecting a domain name try to make sure the name reflects your business in a positive venue and if possible what your business represents. A good example of this would be www.ibm.com or www.att.com.

How do I get listed in the search engines?

Most of today's search engines utilize robots better known as spiders to crawl the web and look for new web sites and changes to existing web sites about every 30 days. Most search engines have a place where you can manually add your web site. Some of these charge a fee for immediate inclusion in their search engines. Others such as Google do not charge but then again you can not pay for your placement in this search engine as it is all based upon an algorithm for page rank based upon external links that are linking to your site.

How do I optimize my site for search engine placement?

This is a field that continues to be in the forefront of discussion among today's web masters and there are a lot of different opinions as to how best to accomplish this. Suffice it to say here that you need to make sure you have the correct META_TAGS such as "title", "description" and "keywords" in that order so that the search engine spiders pick your site up and rank it highly according to your web site content.
